Fire compliance documentation for architectural vinyl films used in Australian lift interiors. Downloadable test reports, NCC requirements by building class, and specification guidance for designers and building certifiers.
Understanding fire groups
What do the group numbers mean?
Under the National Construction Code (NCC), interior wall and ceiling linings are classified into three fire hazard groups based on their Spread-of-Flame Index and Smoke-Developed Index.
For lift interiors in fire-isolated shafts, the NCC requires Group 1: the highest classification, meaning the material does not spread flame and produces minimal smoke.
The NCC currently accepts testing under either AS 1530.3 (the older Early Fire Hazard test) or AS 5637.1 using AS/NZS 3837 cone calorimeter data (the newer, preferred pathway). Both are valid.
The Group classification applies to the film as applied to a specific substrate (e.g. steel, aluminium). The test report will specify the substrate used.
NCC requirements
Requirements by building class
The NCC does not have a single clause specifying lift car lining requirements. Instead, lift interiors are covered by the general provisions for wall and ceiling linings in fire-isolated shafts (Specification C1.10, Table 3).
Most commercial buildings with three or more storeys require fire-isolated lift shafts, which in turn require Group 1 interior linings.
Private residences and low-rise buildings have relaxed requirements. Always confirm with your building certifier for project-specific requirements.
3M DI-NOC: Australian Group 1
Certified series
12 3M DI-NOC series with Australian Group 1 fire classification. 3M DI-NOC is the only architectural vinyl in Australia with verified Group 1 certification.

Australian fire test certificates
Official test reports from accredited Australian laboratories confirming Group 1 classification.
Bodaq international certifications
International fire test documents
Bodaq holds strong international fire certifications including ASTM E84 Class A (US), DIN 4102-1 B1 (Germany), and UL 10C fire door compliance. Australian AS 1530.3 testing is pending. For projects requiring NCC Group 1 compliance, specify 3M DI-NOC.
Important notes
Fire ratings listed here are per-series classifications, not per-SKU. Individual products within a series may vary. We confirm the specific rating for every film we specify at quote stage.
The Group 1 classification under AS 1530.3 applies to the 3M DI-NOC range only. Other architectural vinyls we install (Bodaq, LX Hausys, Soif) carry strong international fire certifications and are suitable for lift interiors where NCC Group 1 is not required, or where a fire engineer provides a Performance Solution.
Fire group classifications apply to the film as applied to a specific substrate. Steel and aluminium lift cab panels are favourable (non-combustible substrate). The test report will specify the substrate used.
Always consult your building certifier or fire engineer for project-specific requirements. We can provide the relevant test certificates as part of your project documentation.
